Brief Encounters: IFI & WFTI Short Film Showcase - Irish Film Festival Boston

The Irish Film Institute and Women in Film and Television Ireland present an inspiring programme of work by women filmmakers, all WFTI members. While these films couldn’t differ more in style, scope, genre, and theme, they all have one thing in common: they are directed and created by the Irish film industry’s most talented up-and-coming female creatives.

IFI is pleased to provide a window on this work. WFTI is a voluntary, members-led organisation run by film and TV professionals, representing the creative, business, educational and technical divisions of the Irish audio-visual sector. The films screening as part of this event are:

Break Us / dir. Rioghnach Ní Ghrioghair / 2019
Mark and Sophie plan to rob a post office but as things go awry, they each discover what they’re really made of…

Match / dir. Laura O’Shea & Tony Doyle / 2019
Two strangers ‘match’ online and meet for casual sex. Their expectations are soon thwarted as they each confront their troubles over the course of one night.

Pat / dir. Emma Wall / 2019
Set in 1978, Pat tells the story of a lonely music lover who keeps in touch with her son in New York through the only phone box in the village.

Life, Boat, Home / dir. Beta Bajgart / 2019
A documentary portrait of Lisa Levins, a widow and mother of a young baby, who embraces her role as intrepid lifeboat navigator with bravery and optimism.

The Grass Ceiling / dir. Iseult Howlett / 2020
Three successful female athletes explore how being physically courageous, unapologetically competitive and deeply passionate in team sport can unlock a freedom to occupy their own skin.

Saving Grace / dir. Siobhán Kavanagh / 2019
When Grace’s husband dies, the once thriving music venue they owned becomes silent and is now only frequented by her best friend Jess and her loyal customer Jim. They keep each other company until one of them falls ill.

An innovative and visually arresting documentary portrait of Belfast-based dancer Oona Doherty.

A community of bedraggled misfits gather to mourn one of their own the only way they know how – an eccentric folk music funeral.
