Kevin Roche: The Quiet Architect

1h 22m Documentary 2017

A portrait of Pritzker Prize-winning Irish American architect Kevin Roche (1922 – 2019). A UCD graduate, Roche studied with Mies Van der Rohe in the US, worked with Eero Saarinen, and then set up his own firm in New York in 1967. His work on over 200 projects (many of them award-wining) has been the subject of exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, at Yale and at the Architectural Association of Ireland.

Mark Noonan’s 2017 film finds Roche aged 95, expansive and still busy. His reflections are complemented by the words of his peers and by Kate McCullough’s crisp and creative cinematography which luxuriates in Roche’s glorious spaces such as the Oakland Museum, California, New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, where Roche was principal architect for over 40 years, and the Convention Centre Dublin.
